What Does the GED Measure
The GED is a high school equivalency exam. But what does this mean? How can a test be the equivalent of high school? And what is it exactly that we expect graduates to know?
About 39 million American adults have no school disenfranchised, and so the door to higher education and better employment opportunities are closed to them. As a group, Americans make about $ 350,000 less in their lives as high school graduates. Instead of the economy and their lives forward, Americans without high school degrees will be withheld. The most widely accepted option for adults without a high school degree is a GED, a high school equivalency exam. What is this investigation? What is it really free? Can it really be the equivalent of high school?
The skills, GED are designed to measure core competencies that all students should learn, including communications, mathematics, problem solving, critical thinking, analysis and processing of information. to identify the GED test design skills that are demanded by employers, universities or vocational schools, and the test is created to measure the real-life skills. According to the American Council of Education (ACE), a successful candidate must GED score better than 40 percent of traditional high school graduates.
The GED test is divided into five sections: reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. It tests skills in understanding important documents and communication through writing, essential skills in any workplace or learning environment. Also tests basic mathematical concepts that are important in dealing with financial management and business issues affecting all adults.
But perhaps the most important skills, the GED measures are thinking. The majority of GED questions are not focused on the knowledge of the facts. Instead, many questions about the measurement of the GED test-taker’s ability, a problem carefully and use reasoning think of one right answer to come. GED test-takers are asked to use critical thinking, problem solving, evaluation and analysis skills and basic knowledge about the nature of science, language, mathematics and social sciences. Because thinking skills can be applied to any discipline or at work, these are the most important skills for any adult to master.
This is good news for the test-taker. It means that for the study, and passing the GED is not involved memorizing four years worth of high school textbooks. Instead, GED test takers can you learn to focus on essential skills. It is also good news for employers. The ACE stated that many employers find that they are “a better trained, more dedicated employees” by the recruitment of GED graduates.
Test preparation is the most important component in passing the GED. Finding the right course is the key. A number of GED courses are available, including test prep books, teaching in adult education, workplace programs and programs of the local university. The best preparation for students who have not passed high school is often an online or computer-based learning program. The best online GED programs are easy to get to the individual needs of student, address different learning styles in an understandable form, and thus the students at their own pace, to check how much and as often as necessary. Be wary of any program that claims the award of a GED or high school diploma through an online test, though. These “certificates” are generally worthless.
About 95% of colleges and employers accept the GED credential, open locked doors for millions of American adults who never finished high school.
